More than Rum. Varela Hermano, creators of Ron Abuelo Rum, are passionate about more than making delicious Rum. The family owned company cares about the environment as well and have implemented a variety of green initiatives to minimize the company’s total carbon footprint.

Proving their commitment to the environment, at the distillery alternative fuel sources including bagasse and shoots – wasteful byproducts of milling and harvesting – replace the use of biomass bunker oil. Additionally, as a pioneer for making environmental changes, Varela Hermanos was the first in Panama to eliminate the burning of the sugar cane fields before harvest. Now they solely institute the traditional method of manual cane cutting, which yields more nutrient rich soil. Both modifications drastically reduce CO2 emissions and greenhouse effects, establishing a more Eco-friendly distillery.

So enjoy a cocktail or two this National Rum Day and kick back and relax or have some friends over and mingle. Either way, enjoy the recipes, Xoxo!
