The Hunger Games Portrays True Light of Media

The Hunger Games--jacket-330

Suspense, tension, and urgency are the first three words that come to mind when thinking of Suzanne Collins’ trilogy, ‘The Hunger Games.’ The gripping novel hits theatres on March 23rd, 2012 and the sequel on November 22nd, 2013. This past Monday the movie officially released trailer for the movie staring Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen.

So why has the world gone crazy over the gripping compelling novel? The novel is an addicting read that even Stephen King is quoted on saying he couldn’t stop reading. Each chapter ends with a dramatic new ending that makes it impossible to set it down. It’s a fast read with short sentences. There are flashbacks to Katniss’ father who died in a mining incident. And it’s told in first-person so your thoughts can’t help but match exactly what Katniss questions.

The plot? The fictional world takes place in Panem—a post apocalyptic world. In this new world there is a strict controlling government known as The Capitol. The Capitol people are wealthy and pampered while the rest of the districts live in poverty. The Capitol sets up The Hunger Games in response to a rebellion. In the game one boy and one girl from the ages between 12-18 from each district are chosen to participate. The concept of the game? One must win. Everyone else dies. A battle of survival. And in the mist of the violent rushing bloody battle a love triangle emerges. More… read more

Celebrity Profile: Author Stephenie Meyer

Stephenie Meyer at the 'Breaking Dawn' Premiere

Many are familiar with the phenomenon that is ‘Twilight’ and the author of the series, Stephenie Meyer. In the last few years, she has achieved success in the literary and film world. This year, she added another element to her repertoire when she became the producer of ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 1′ (in theaters Nov 18). Yet few realize the amazing journey that led to the creation of the four book franchise. When Meyer sat down to write the books, not only was she far from a published author but she had never written so much as a short story. One evening in 2003, Meyer had a dream in which two teenagers, a vampire and an ordinary human, were arguing. In order not to forget the striking vision, she sat down to write what would become chapter 13 of Twilight. She later revealed; “I had been bottling up who I was for so long. I needed an expression.”

She was able to complete the novel by focusing on enjoying the process rather than concerning herself with the reactions of others. “If I stopped to think about what someone else thought…I wouldn’t be able to get a word on the page”. She was determined to create a world that was uniquely her own. With three children all under the age of five, Meyer went days without sleep as the story poured out of her. One of her main goals was presenting Bella, an ordinary girl that many could relate to. The clumsy teenager faces awkwardness, isolation, and feelings of inferiority. This would prove to be a large reason for the book’s success. More after the jump…

Eila Mell: The Fashion Book Writer’s Inspiring Story

Eila Meira and Justine

When Eila Mell first walked into the masquerade party, I immediately took notice of the massive silver ring on her finger in which she told me it reminded her of a disco ball, sparkling from every angle, capturing everyone’s eye, and shining in an elegant way. A great metaphor for Mell herself as I listened to her story.

Born in Howard Beach, Queens, Mell originally was an actress. She studied acting at Queens College and was up for a big role on a soap. Though she was denied the part, instead of casting herself away into pity, she decided to write her first book entitled, “Casting Might-Have-Beens: A Film-by-Film Directory of Actors Considered for Roles Given to Others.” And just like that, Mell transitioned into the writing world.

“I said I’m going to do it and that’s it, it’s going to work out no matter what,” says Mell.

Writing her first book wasn’t as glamorous or romantic as the world may portray it. She bought a how- to- get- published book that was very informal, written as though the literary agent who wrote the book was talking directly to you. It described how to write a query letter and at the end of the book was a list of agents. More…

Exclusive Interview with Dancer, Author, and Journalist: Keltie Colleen

Keltie Colleen-2

It’s difficult to argue that New York is a Mecca for the creative and talented. Amidst the frenzied hustle of the dynamic city are thousands of hopefuls fighting to survive and in many cases, fighting for their art to survive. Keltie Colleen was no exception. Years ago, the aspiring dancer left her hometown of Sherwood Park, Canada and became a ward of the NYC audition line-up.

With no connections in the entertainment industry, she fought hard to standout based on her talent alone. She rented a room in a cramped Queens apartment and refused to live the clichéd version of an artist’s life. She was determined to never be a dancer/waitress and took any dance related job she could to make rent. Her dedication paid off when she was selected to be a part of the Radio City Rockettes, her childhood dream. Though this didn’t guarantee immediate success in the dance world, it did lead to a string of notable gigs. Keltie has danced alongside the likes of Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Fergie, Christina Perry, John Legend, and Sean-Paul. She was also featured in such films as ‘Enchanted’ and the upcoming ‘Footloose’.  More…

The Light of Istanbul

Award-winning photographer Jean-Michel Berts focuses his camera to the mysterious and ancient city of Istanbul. Assouline Publishing invites you to marvel at the fourth book in his “Light of” Series, The Light of Istanbul, a magnificent homage to the city that captures its aura of enchantment through atmospheric black and white photographs taken at daybreak.

Through Berts’ lens, view the city in moments of dreamlike serenity—when deserted streets and waterways are wrapped in a mystery all their own. “I always try to give my photographs a feeling of timelessness…. I never know the photograph I’m going to make, the photograph comes to me, it finds me” — Jean-Michel Berts. “Istanbul, a universal beauty where poet and archeologist, diplomat and merchant, princess and sailor, northerner and westerner screams with same admiration. The whole world thinks that this city is the most beautiful place on earth.” — Edmondo de Amicis. More after the jump…

Michael Musto: Fork on the Left, Knife in the Back

Musto Party Photos-2148

Perez Hilton and the countless other gossip “journalists” plaguing the web are all a bunch of copycats. The original gossip columnist, and the only one I’m willing to read is Michael Musto. On Monday night, Michael celebrated the launch of his second book, Fork on the Left, Knife in the Back.

Michael celebrated 25 years writing for the Village Voice in a over the top party hosted by Joan Rivers last February. His column and blog, La Dolce Musto, is certainly not dull. Michael loathes controversy and isn’t shy to talk about topics like Anderson Cooper’s sexuality or suggest that Donald Trump hurts the sanctity of marriage more than gays. He has even been known to blog about yours truly! :-) More…
