Editorial Photo-Shoot in NYC: Queen of the Jungle

Queen of the Jungle-4499

Earlier today, my great friend and former Madison Square Garden house photographer, Betsy Becker and I headed over to Columbus Circle where artist, Peter Woytuk has two of his sculptures–life size replicas of elephants on display. I’ve been dreaming about centering a photo-shoot around them ever since I first saw them.

Last night I went to the Home Depot, a store I think I’ve only been to once or twice in my entire life to pick up an eight-foot ladder, which is unfortunately the largest ladder they sell in their store, as the elephant is about ten feet high at its lowest point. Miraculously, I was able to get onto and off of the elephant unscathed.

There weren’t any signs on the sculptures that said you couldn’t climb them; nonetheless we did the shoot at 6:45 AM as to not draw a crowd or attract police attention. Read more and view photos below. read more

Cynthia Rowley’s Styler Launch Party at Sephora, NYC

Cynthia Rowley shows off her new Ceramic Styler

On Saturday, I went over to Sephora in the Meatpacking district where the CFDA award winning designer launched the Amika X Cynthia Rowley ceramic styler. The event was really fun; Cynthia hosted a meet and greet with fans, they raffled off an amazing dress from Rowley’s spring collection, and ladies were treated to free hair styling with the Amika team.

The event was also really laid-back, which I liked. Cynthia walked in by herself off the street and there weren’t any wristbands, lines, or security barricades.

The limited-edition styler, which is sold exclusively at Sephora, is really cool looking and features tech-grade, ceramic plates and a gorgeous floral print designed by Cynthia. The floral, ceramic styler retails for $115 and includes an oversize poster of the Rowley’s print and a backstage look at her spring show. See more photos after the jump. read more

Isaac Mizrahi Collaborates With Proper Attire Condoms

Isaac-Mizrahi44158

On Tuesday, Kelly Cutrone and Company (aka People’s Revolution) invited us to a cocktail party at the SoHo Grand Hotel to celebrate the launch of Isaac Mizrahi’s collaboration with Proper Attire Condoms.

The condoms come in three designs; a tartan design, one with oversized polka dots, pink and white gingham, and a floral print. The condoms, which are also in collaboration with Planned Parenthood, are designed with the hope that it can be more socially acceptable for women to obtain and carry condoms around with them.

By collaborating with Proper Attire, Isaac Mizrahi joins the likes of designers Mara Hoffman, Rebecca Minkoff, Vena Cava, Charlotte Ronson, Alexander Wang, Brian Reyes, Jeremy Scott, and Yigal Azrouël, who have all collaborated on collections for the condom brand. More after the jump. read more

Parsons Wins Overall Judge’s Opinion at Fusion

look1-sarah-hoops

On Sunday, March 4 photographer extraordinaire, Jane Kratochvil and I went to Parsons the New School for Design’s Midtown campus to see Fusion, a fashion show that features designs from twenty-nine freshman and sophomores who all go to either Parsons or the Fashion Institute of Technology.

The show, which has been produced for twelve years now, was judged by Todd Thomas, creative consultant at Victoria’s Secret; Joshua McKinley, runner up on season nine of Project Runway; Carole Hochmann, a women’s intimates designer; Fabiola Arias, womenswear designer plus winner of the 2011 Fashion Group International Rising Star Award, and Teen Vogue.

Below are some of my favorite looks from the show and the names of the talented, emerging designers who created them.

Parsons and FIT present Fusion

Fusion Fashion Show 2012-1

Ever wonder how designers like Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, Donna Karan, Anna Sui, Michael Kors, Nanette Lepore and Reem Acra got started? They all have one thing in common—they went to school to study fashion first; specifically they all went to either Parsons or the Fashion Institute of Technology.

For the last twelve years the two schools have challenged each other in a competitive fashion show known as Fusion. The director of the show, Jimmy Ramey, started Fusion when he was an Resident Assistant at one of the Parsons dormitories.  Ramey got FIT involved, and it became a competition.

The show features about 30 young designers, most of whom are freshman and sophomores. The show features both menswear and women’s wear. This year’s show should be particularly interesting as it serves as a tie breaker, both schools have won six shows.

Menswear: Joseph Abboud Fall 2012

Joseph Abboud - (3)

This season, Joseph Abboud’s public relations team was kind enough to offer press a bus from Lincoln Center to Pier 57, where they had their show around half past five on Thursday, February 9th.

The Lebanese American designer, who started his career at 16 working part-time at Louis Boston and joined Ralph Lauren in 1981, eventually became associate director of menswear design, and launched his label in 1986.

His menswear collection for Fall 2012 featured a lot of great tartan suits and jackets; the color scheme was generally neutrals, which I have come to expect from menswear. Gallery after the jump…

Video: EMERSON’s Full Fall 2012 Fashion Show

For her Fall 2012 collection, EMERSON designer Jackie Fraser-Swan was initially inspired by an antique art piece that incorporated an image of a porcelain doll, known as the “Dresden Dolls” which originated from Dresden, Germany – a city that was badly damaged during WWII bombings. Thus, her research into the 1940’s continued to expand her inspiration.

As Fraser-Swan explains, “Black and white images of the aftermath of the bombings influenced my collection at first, and then as I continued to research, many more elements from this period of time began to interest me.” She started to focus on how women’s roles changed in America, sending them into the work force and into female army corps. The progression of women’s roles in society and the successive development of style, beauty, and independence were a key focal point. More after the jump…

Video: Richie Rich presents Popluxe Fall 2012

Richie Rich has come full circle from three seasons ago. The designer, once half of the design duo Heatherette along with Traver Rains, has broken off to create a new line called Popluxe with his boyfriend, Ross Higgens and their friend Jean-Luc Quevauvillers.

After his packed show backed by the King Collective at Lincoln Center in September 2010 (for Spring 2011) with Ellen DeGeneres he went on to do a show at the Manhattan Center (aka the Hammerstein Ballroom) for Fall 2011 and LAVO for Spring 2012.

In the next few months Richie and his friends will be opening a storefront like he used to have with Heatherette in St. Marks Place. Getting into the show was a bit chaotic; the show was added to the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week schedule at the last minute and his public relations contacts were not included on our lists. Of course, we have come to expect nothing less than an over the top show from Mr. Rich. Fall 2012 is no exception, models went down the runway wearing necklaces made from kids converse shoes.
